ben smith
The Downbeat Foundation was created by the people who knew and loved Ben Smith best — his family, friends, and former bandmates — united by a shared mission to keep his passion for music alive. In high school, Ben was the heartbeat of Dreading Monday, a local band and creative outlet. Behind the drum kit, he brought energy, humor, and an undeniable love for music. But Ben’s impact reached far beyond the stage — he inspired others with his generosity, kindness, and belief that music should be for everyone.
When we lost Ben unexpectedly in March 2025, at just 39 years old, the silence was overwhelming. Together, we decided the best way to honor him was to give the gift of music to the next generation — welcoming drummers of every background, school, and experience level. The Downbeat Foundation provides drum lessons and instruments to Harrisburg-area kids in grades 4–12 who have the desire to play but lack the means — ensuring that Ben’s rhythm, spirit, and love of music continue to inspire for years to come.
